Coaching Speaker

People are regularly required to give presentations for clients, conferences, keynote addresses, board meetings, off-site sessions and press briefings-often without a sense of what really works in an effective presentation.  Coaching is a useful tool to help groups and individuals design and deliver powerful presentations that demonstrate their knowledge and convey a clear, persuasive message.  Coaching structures their content preparation time and provides videotaped rehearsals with feedback to produce a focused, dynamic delivery.

The Coaching Process can be Adapted to the Presenter’s Needs:

Strong Message and Framework
An individual or group works with the coach to clarify their overall message (i.e. a recommended direction or a problem with its solution).   By outlining what they are trying to accomplish in this talk, they can introduce the topic to gain attention, build their case and close strongly.  A well-structured presentation can illustrate its main points with visuals and relevant examples to make it memorable.

Clear Talking Points or Visuals
Presenters work with the coach to flesh out their message using visuals with graphics and bullet points.  They make sure the strong message is emphasized by, and not lost in, the visuals.  They craft a talk for the presenter to tell a story with vivid examples and real-life situations, instead of reading the bullet points.
The goal is a presentation that is logical to deliver, uses the presenter’s own experience, captures the audience’s attention, so they can make use of the information.

Dynamic Delivery
Presenters bring their slides or speaker’s notes to practice their delivery.  The coach videotapes their normal style of delivery to objectively assess their strengths and areas for development.  They watch the videotape to gain this awareness and decide what to develop.  The coach gives tips on how to make eye contact, speak conversationally, move in a confident way, speak clearly, use vocal variety and pause.  The presenter then redelivers the presentation and views this videotape to reinforce the change.

Coaching Situations for Presenters:

  • Preparing a company presentation that can be delivered by various key
    people

  • Developing a panel presentation with synchronized timing and content

  • Presenting as a group at a conference with clear, compelling and related messages

  • Rehearsing key presentations for a dynamic, smooth and professional delivery

  • Finding a personal style using humor and stories to express oneself confidently

  • Sharing technical knowledge and keeping the audience’s interest with visuals

  • Delivering an inspirational  keynote talk that sets direction with relevant anecdotes

  • Being entertaining with “dry” content by using real life examples for impact

  • Designing a technical presentation for a business audience’s knowledge level

  • Incorporating the company’s competitive thrust in client presentations

Many thanks for your coaching. The group shined the day of the conference, and would have fallen short of that without your help.
